Spanning a remarkable 21-year career (1969–1989) primarily spent with the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants, and Detroit Tigers, the left-handed slugger crushed 414 career home runs and drove in 1,354 runs. Celebrated by baseball historian Bill James as "the most underrated player in baseball history," Evans possessed a legendary eye at the plate, drawing 1,605 career walks—which consistently elevated his on-base percentage to a stellar .361 despite a modest .248 lifetime batting average. He cemented his place in baseball lore during the historic 1973 season with Atlanta, launching 41 home runs to join Hank Aaron and Davey Johnson as the first trio of teammates to each hit 40 or more homers in a single season. Later in his career, Evans provided the veteran presence and pop needed to help guide the 1984 Detroit Tigers to a World Series championship, and in 1985, he led the American League with 40 home runs at age 38, becoming the oldest player to win a home run title.
